Art Whirled

THIS BEGINS WITH ART BLABBER, so if ya wanna skip it..just scroll down to the YELLOW

So, as you may or may not know, I am currently studying at the Phillips Collection, a small, little museums in DC, but also, the first national Modern Art museum in the nation *(thats what makes us sound fancy...we're not)

As I have been here for a few weeks, I have begun to understand and really see that Art Community at first hand, seeing the people who shape and define what is happening in the little community that is Art in the US. (I would say Art in America but that is the name of a pretty big magazine so...in the US it is). Well, its really interesting to see these people, meet them, and hear them speak. Needless to say, what I am finding is that people talk smart. Jibber jabber laden with with words that I usually need context to understand, conjugations of verbs that I had always thought were nouns, and such. Now, I have always spoken alright, hell, I did host a radio show, but I was never a "speaker" and definitely not one that sounded extremely intelligent.

My struggle has become to figure out whether all this fancy talk means something or whether it is simply pretentious. Really the same goes for modern Art itself. I hear many an arugument of the artist as enlightened one, leader of the people, dreamer of the people, and to me, well, the artist should be expressor of the people, speaker for the people. Works should express something, not nothing. Works to be some real, and if not beautiful, at least emotional and powerful. I am not a Romanticist, I do not need blatancy, but I still need, emotions! Feelings! Ideas! Visual Stimulation!

Needless to say, I struggle with accepting Jackson Pollack as my personal savior.

Here's the deal:
We read a famous little article called Avante Garde and Kitcsh, by Clement Greenberg, and it pretty much argued that high art should maintain this on-high power, above the masses of the people, and that Kitsch is the Normal Rockwell approach that is for, well, 'everyone else.' Now, this was written quite a while ago, and its ideas have since been attacked and bombarded with arguements...but the idea still lingers in my head.

Is art an eltist thing? Inaccesable and illegible? Is it no longer meant for everyone, but only for the few and powerful?

If so, well, it goes against everything I believe.

Being at the National Gallery the week that Barack Obama was sworn in meant that there were A LOT of people from out of town visiting a museum they had never seen. Seeing these families enter the modern wings and explore things that were supposedly 'too difficult' for them to understand was frustrating. Art is to be shared, and spread, and loved, amongst all, and it bothers me to think that some Art Theorists are such elitist jerks.

Anyways...sorry, about my little art rant. ...........................................

Living in Dc as a young adult, and studying here, I have begun to explore the town. I have seen Adams Morgan a great area where I literally at the best falafels in the world. No joke. You visit, I will take you there. There is a block of Adams Morgan FILLED with small restaurants from everywhere, Peru to Pakistan, France to Vietnam. Its incredible. I want to go to all of them...but I don't want to get fat...hrm..or poor...so I probably never will.

DC is a city of government, all the black peacoats, suits and ties, and shiny loafers seems to march into the area where I live only to leave at the end of the day. Needless to say, the nightlife on the Hill is not so great.

Dupont Circle, where my little darling Phillips is located, seems to be a bookstore area. Coffee shops, a few museums, every embassy one could dream of, and bookstores. Its an interesting little place, always bustling with cars, foreign people.

Today, I am going to U Street, the area which is famed for its Ethiopian cuisine, its night life and its overall artsy vibe. Busboys and Poets is a DC Institutions, with spoken word nights, poetry slams, artist readings, coffee and sandwiches. Its main location is in the heart of the U Street neighborhood, along with what seems to be a diverse crowd of neighbors. I will write about my experiences in my next post.

Until then,
Love you all
Miss you all
Me

Post Script:
I forgot to mention, yesterday was the anniversary of Roe V Wade which brought out huge masses of people to the capital, carrying big pro life signs and very bloody vulgar images of aborted things.. Its was brutal and offensive.

All the people with me were as disgusted and offended by the images and actions of these people as I was. Some groups of pre-teens came down to protest almost as a vacation, and I cannot understand why these kids were being used to protest something I am sure they do not understand. Needless to say, the entire day, I was angry and frustrated with these people, howver, I said nothing because they wanted to agitate me and I would not let them.

How can we not just accept the actions of others although they contradict our own life ideals? Acceptance people, is the only way we can all get along, and teaching hate in such an anti-WOMAN way is upsetting for me.

hey fellow feminist, i like the postscript:) yea, those images are incredibly offensive and also incredibly ant-woman, agreed. but i guess in a way i feel that im finally doing my part. anyway, two things before i forget: you should submit something to this magazine, art in america, or whatever you said it was called. the other thing is that you're not crazy to be put off and intimidated by the speakers and this new language of art that you're exposed to but you'll find that every field has it's own language and the better educated and more emersed you become in the field the more comfortable you'll feel and before you even know it you'll be speaking the language too. trust me it was the exact same way for me... as i started med school and hear doctors discussing doctor things i thought i'd never be able to get it and little by little i started to feel like i undertood and could even contribute. then the same thing happended in residency. trust me, when i got there in july i had no idea what people were talking about and now i'm picking up that language too. so the point is that you'll learn it and then i'll have no idea what you're saying! but at least for now i'm still following. also, once you've mastered the language then you can defend your position about art being more than a thing for the elite with more gusto and credibility. so that doesn't have to change. ok, you get it, and if you didn't guess, i'm posting instead of what? studing. time to get back to work. love you and miss you and can't wait to take your tour of dc! start thinking about where you want to eat since it sounds like the selection's a little overwhelming. have a good weekend and shabbat shalom!

Hey Zaika

I am glad you're back to writing - I really like reading your posts. Yes, I am sure every field comes with its own jargon, and every educated field comes with its own smart talk, and everything art related comes with a mix of genuine/inspired and pretentious. I also agree with IIIEHbKA that the smart talk skill comes with knowledge and experience, and after you learn enough you should be able to sound smart not because you want to look smart but because you are smart.
Anyway, your neighborhood exploring thing sounds exciting. I agree, you capitol hill area does not have a lot to offer outside of inauguration, but then you got to be right in the vicinity for the momentous occasion. And now that it's over, DC is really small enough and your semester is long enough for you to have a decent chance to explore. Sounds like your art immersion goes beyond just visual arts - I mean slam poetry and stuff.

Just please KEEP SAFE and BE SMART when you are in a neighborhood surrounded by not-so-safe areas (they have quite a few of those in DC). Know where you are going and travel in groups!

So enjoy everything and stay safe!
And keep writing.
Love you and miss you a lot!

about art, totally true, what are they doing bashing norman rockwell, he was awesome... and maybe you should learn the jargon so you can stand up for art being for everybody. i would be interested in going to the philips collectin w/u.

I do not mind art experts to like and love and pay big bucks out of their own pockets for whatever, but i do mind if some museum spends tax dollars on a garbage, and we all have to see it and pay entrance fees , often in american dollars. .. Also, if there is no craftsmanship, it is not an art. Also, craftsmanship is not an art either. It is not very smart what i write , by the way, i am just killing time and supporting you, because many people have thoughts like that. Like thinkig about what will be your position on an issue of, in this case, what is art.
And to lead, and be a beacon for the peoples, you have to be smart and such. You must have ideas or visions or thoughts, you name it, so many people could understand, by seeing, or, in my case, after an explanation and such. Also, as a person who, and i am not ashamed of it, despises communism, i do not appreciate ideologigal, propaganda art and such.
Also, it is such a complicated question you are asking, there will be no agreement whatsoever , it is just to have your own opinion on this matter, and, i do not have to point it to you, that quite often it is hard to agree even with yourself on some issues, like is this thing just a thing or an art and such.
Liza, i just re-read my post, i had hard time understanding what i wrote, i made some changes, and it 's got even worse.
Take it as a piece of art, like sometimes artists do stuff, but people understand it differently', like i wrote a composition in 5th grade, and my teacher liked it a lot, but i did not mean what she liked. I was very, very surprised. I did say anything, naturally, and my composition was not an art, it is an example that people have different opinions, and sometimes favorable ,sometimes unfavorable matters, qsometimes an artist did not mean what other people see, i believe you told us about such examplesand nobody knows what majority will think, but, again, majority does not consist of expert or so they think about themselves.
Final thought, , when you come back
, you will take us to museum and will give us lecture/s/, because you know so much. Take it is easy what i just wrote, some stuff is pretty obvious, some is didactic. I just want to remind you that there are so many things we have to think about, and sometimes you do not have an opinion no matter how hard you try. I put so much work into typing his, i will send it to you, although i do not see much sence in it. It is to show that i, personaaly, do not have an opinion on this. Papskis.
